Wacky Watercress #3
Everyday experiences in normal life will always get boring because repetition makes any activity boring. The motivation to seek out new, and thus interesting experiences motivates many people to do crazy or dangerous activities. Experiencing something completely new challenges one's perception of reality and assumptions about the way things are, helping contently expand horizons of the possible. It is my quest for an enlarged conception of reality that I smoke pot and consider it a fantastic little drug.
Without the addition of mind altering substances, my brain has a habit of working in a certain way. I think about things the same way I always have, I experience things in the same manner, and my neurons seem to follow a well traveled path of connectivity. When high, those well traveled neurological paths are circumvented and the road less traveled is taken. When high, familiar thoughts and sensations are experienced in a completely new way. The dramatic becomes more dramatic, the funny becomes funnier, the sad becomes sadder, and the difficult becomes more difficult. The ability to experience one sensation in two completely different ways despite being trapped in the same body and same mind is a unique opportunity which permits me to be shaken from my sobriety induced rut.
But pot has more positive qualities than simply expanding reality, albeit less significant and philosophical ones Pot is a drug whose effects are mild enough and temporary enough that almost any activity can be done while high. In stark contrast, once one in drunk one has very few options available. This lends pot a versatility and ability to be consumed every day that other drugs do not have.
Pot also serves as a social lubricant. While it is like alcohol in the sense that being high loosens people tongues and makes them more willing to open up, but that is not the primary method by which pot instigates social interaction. No one retains 100% of their intelligence while high and often times becomes quite silly, giggly, forgetful, easily distracted or simply hungry. As such, abnormal or socially unacceptable behavior becomes acceptable. Not being high does not and cannot serve as an excuse for behavior which is never acceptable, but it certainly allows people more latitude in the actions they take because if anyone criticizes what they do the response will inevitably be “but I was high.” Consequently, everyone is more themselves while high. They are less caught up in the world of false social pretensions and can simply dismiss any faux pas of misstep with “but I was high.”
And to add a cherry to an already decadent cake covered in scrumptious frosting, pot is the perfect hang over cure. The principal physical side effects of a hang over are nausea and a head ache. The principal physical side effects of pot are hunger and a light headed feeling. The two cancel each other out meaning that pot has so many wonderful properties it can even make up for the short comings of other drugs.
